How to use Mustping
Introduction
Have you ever missed an important message from your manager, client, or project team because it was buried under dozens of other notifications?
MustPing is built to solve that problem.
Instead of treating every notification on your phone as equally important, MustPing lets you create custom rules that decide which notifications deserve your attention, when you should be alerted, and how you should be alerted.
You can monitor specific apps, conversations, DMs, groups, or channels, filter notifications using keywords, customize your alert style, and decide when the alert should stop.
This guide will walk you through the complete MustPing setup—from granting the required Android permissions to creating your first notification rule, configuring advanced settings, and subscribing to MustPing Pro.
Step 1: Install and Open MustPing
Start by installing MustPing on your Android device.
After installation, open the app and follow the initial setup instructions.
MustPing needs access to incoming notifications so it can identify notifications that match the rules you create.
The app does not require you to treat every notification as important. Instead, you decide exactly which notifications should trigger your custom alerts.
Step 2: Grant Notification Access
To monitor notifications, MustPing requires Notification Access permission.
This allows MustPing to detect incoming notifications from the apps you choose to monitor.
To grant access:
- Open MustPing.
- Go to the permission or setup section.
- Tap Notification Access.
- Android will open the Notification Access settings.
- Find MustPing.
- Enable Notification Access.
- Confirm the permission if Android asks you to do so.
- Return to MustPing.
Once enabled, MustPing can process incoming notifications and check them against your configured notification rules.
Step 3: Allow MustPing Notifications
MustPing also needs permission to show its own notifications.
When Android asks you to allow notifications, tap Allow.
You can also verify this manually by going to:
Android Settings → Apps → MustPing → Notifications
Make sure MustPing notifications are enabled.
This allows MustPing to display the alerts generated by your notification rules.
Step 4: Create Your First Notification Rule
Now you're ready to create your first rule.
A rule tells MustPing exactly what notifications you consider important.
For example, you might create a rule for:
- Messages from your manager
- A specific Slack DM
- A project group
- A Microsoft Teams conversation
- An important work chat
- A specific type of work notification
To get started, open the Rules section in MustPing and create a new rule.
MustPing guides you through the rule creation process step by step.
Step 5: Select the App You Want to Monitor
The first step in creating a rule is selecting the app you want MustPing to monitor.
Choose the application where your important notifications arrive.
For example, you might select:
- Slack
- Microsoft Teams
- Google Chat
- Gmail
- Outlook
- Another supported communication or work application
This tells MustPing where it should look for notifications that match your rule.
Step 6: Select DMs, Groups, Channels, or Conversations
After selecting the app, choose the specific conversations you want to monitor.
Depending on the selected app, you can configure your rule around things such as:
- Specific Direct Messages (DMs)
- Specific groups
- Selected chats
- Channels
- Other available conversation types
For example, you could create a rule like:
App: Slack
Conversation: Direct Message with Manager
Or:
App: Microsoft Teams
Conversation: Production Team
The goal is to focus your alerts on the conversations that actually matter.
You don't need to make every notification from the app trigger a MustPing alert.
Step 7: Choose the Days and Time
Next, decide when your rule should be active.
You can configure the rule based on your schedule.
For example:
Days: Monday–Friday
Time: 9:00 AM–6:00 PM
This is useful if you want MustPing to monitor work-related conversations during your working hours without interrupting your personal time.
You can configure the days and time according to your own routine.
For professionals who work different shifts or have on-call responsibilities, custom schedules can help ensure that important notifications are monitored at the right time.
Step 8: Add Include and Exclude Keywords
This is where you can make your notification rules even more specific.
MustPing allows you to define Include Keywords and Exclude Keywords.
Include Keywords
Use include keywords when you only want notifications containing certain words or phrases to trigger the rule.
For example:
urgentproductiondeploymentapprovalincident
You could configure a rule to alert you when a relevant notification contains words related to an urgent production issue.
Exclude Keywords
Exclude keywords let you ignore notifications containing specific words or phrases.
For example, you might want to exclude:
resolvedFYInewsletter- Other routine messages
This gives you more control over which notifications are considered important.
Step 9: Choose Your Alert Style
Now decide how MustPing should alert you when your rule is triggered.
Different situations require different levels of attention.
Depending on your device and configured options, you can customize your alert style with options such as:
- Strong vibration
- Custom alarm sounds
- Camera flash alerts
- Different alert styles for different rules
Examples
Team Discussion: A gentle alert may be enough.
Manager Approval: You might choose a stronger alarm.
Critical Production Incident: You may want an attention-grabbing combination of vibration, sound, or flash.
The advantage is that you can configure different rules differently. Your phone doesn't have to treat every important conversation in exactly the same way.
Step 10: Configure the Stopping Condition
Next, decide when the alert should stop.
Depending on your needs, you can configure the rule's stopping behavior.
For example, you may choose to:
- Alert only once
- Stop after a selected duration
- Continue reminding you until you acknowledge the notification
This is particularly useful for messages that shouldn't be forgotten.
For example, if your manager sends a message asking for deployment approval, you may want MustPing to continue reminding you until you've acknowledged the alert.
For less urgent messages, a single alert may be sufficient.
Step 11: Review Your Rule
Before saving your rule, MustPing provides a Review step.
Take a moment to check your configuration.
Review:
- Selected app
- Selected DMs, groups, or conversations
- Active days
- Active time
- Include keywords
- Exclude keywords
- Alert style
- Stopping condition
This gives you a chance to make sure the rule behaves exactly as you expect.
Step 12: Preview Your Alert
Before finishing your rule, you can also use the Preview Alert option.
This lets you experience how the configured alert will behave.
You can check things such as:
- The alert sound
- Vibration
- Flash behavior
- Overall alert style
This is useful because you can test your alert configuration before relying on it for an important notification.
Once you're happy with the configuration, save the rule.
Your MustPing rule is now ready.
Step 13: Manage Your Rules
After creating your rules, you can manage them from the Rules tab.
From there, you can review your configured notification rules and manage your setup.
If you no longer need a rule, you can also delete it directly from the Rules tab.
For example, you might remove a rule when:
- A project has ended
- You change teams
- You no longer work with a client
- You change your notification strategy
This keeps your MustPing setup clean and relevant.
Step 14: Configure Cooldown in Settings
Once you've created your rules, you can configure additional behavior from the Settings page.
One important option is the Cooldown feature.
Imagine an important message arrives and triggers an alert. You don't check it immediately. Without a cooldown, you could receive repeated alerts for the same situation.
Cooldown helps prevent excessive repeated alerts by controlling how frequently MustPing can alert you again.
This is useful when you want to stay informed without having your phone repeatedly alert you every few seconds.
Step 15: Configure Burst Control
MustPing also includes Burst Control.
When multiple notifications arrive close together, you may not want your phone to trigger an alert for every single notification.
Burst Control helps manage situations where notifications arrive rapidly in a short period, preventing a single highly active chat from flooding you with back-to-back alerts.
This can be especially useful for busy group chats, active work channels, or periods when multiple related notifications arrive together.
Instead of being overwhelmed by a burst of alerts, you can control how MustPing handles these notification spikes.
Step 16: Import and Export Your Rules
If you've spent time creating multiple notification rules, rebuilding them from scratch can be frustrating.
MustPing provides Import and Export options to help manage your rule configuration.
You can export your rules and import them when needed.
This can be useful when:
- Moving to a new phone
- Reinstalling the app
- Backing up your configuration
- Sharing or transferring your rule setup
Instead of manually recreating every rule, you can use the available import and export functionality to manage your configuration more easily.
Step 17: Purchase MustPing Pro
If you want to unlock the premium features available in MustPing, you can purchase a Pro subscription.
Open the Settings page and navigate to the purchase or subscription section.
You'll see the available subscription plans.
Depending on the plans currently offered, you may have options such as:
- Monthly subscription
- Yearly subscription
Select the plan you prefer and continue with the purchase process.
The payment is processed through Google Play Billing.
Follow the Google Play instructions to complete your purchase.
Once the purchase is successfully completed, MustPing will verify your subscription and unlock the applicable Pro features.
Step 18: Restore Your Purchase
If you've already purchased MustPing Pro but have reinstalled the app or switched devices, you can use the Restore Purchase option.
Make sure you're signed into Google Play using the same Google account that was used to purchase the subscription.
Open the purchase section in MustPing and select the option to restore your purchase.
MustPing will check your Google Play subscription status and restore your Pro access if an active subscription is found.
A Real-World Example
Imagine you're a software engineer responsible for production deployments.
You create a MustPing rule like this:
App
Slack
Conversation
Direct Message with Manager
Schedule
Monday–Friday, 9 AM–6 PM
Include Keywords
deploy approval production
Exclude Keywords
FYI
Alert Style
Strong vibration + custom alarm
Stopping Condition
Continue until acknowledged
Now imagine your manager sends:
"Can you approve the production deployment?"
Instead of that message being buried under dozens of Slack notifications, MustPing can identify the notification based on your configured rule and trigger your chosen alert.
The idea is simple:
You decide what matters. MustPing helps make sure you notice it.
Final Thoughts
MustPing isn't designed to give you more notifications.
It's designed to help you prioritize the notifications that actually matter.
You can select the apps and conversations you care about, narrow notifications using keywords, choose exactly when monitoring should be active, customize your alert style, and decide when alerts should stop.
You can then use features like Cooldown, Burst Control, and Import/Export to fine-tune your notification experience.
Whether you're a software engineer waiting for deployment approval, an SRE monitoring production, a project manager waiting for an important response, or a professional handling critical client conversations, MustPing helps you stay aware of the notifications that deserve your attention.
